You’re listening to episode 9 of The Business Family! Today, we sat down with Ryan and Jacquelyn Brennan of Pilates + Coffee in Chicago. And oh, man not only is this a crazy and amazing story but these two are some of the most thoughtful people we know! We talk about starting your business in the midst of massive change, leaning into your network to help drive you forward and how to successfully be in business with your significant other!

We start off talking about the insane story of how Pilates + Coffee came to be. It all started when Jacquelyn found out the pilates studio she was working at was planning to sell or close down in the next year or so. She could have joined another studio or maybe even opened or own but Ryan, her husband, had other ideas. While at one of the first ever retreats for The Teacher’s Collective, Jacquelyn got an 18-page business plan for a new business call Pilates + Coffee (P+C). This little dream quickly became something that the Brennans thought they would someday pursue but they found themselves pregnant with their son. Even then, they used their network of friends and fellow business owners to start them down the path of opening up this new business of theirs.

But when their son was a week old, Jacquelyn got a phone call she’ll never forget - her studio had been sold and it wasn’t what it was going to be. So they signed the lease and began build out for P+C. When their son was 4 months old, P+C was officially open for business.

But this was a group effort. Jacquelyn and Ryan give credit to all of the people in their life that helped them along the way including Ipsento Coffee, Real Good Juice and more.

And finally the fun part - working together as a married couple! It is a delicate balance but the Brennans do it with such grace because they know exactly what their roles are within the business.

This is a don’t miss kind of episode and we had so much fun sitting down the the two of them!
